Our history

On November 14, 1895, Mr M.J.H.H. (Henri) Paulussen, LLM was sworn in as a lawyer before the First Chamber of the District Court of Maastricht.  With the establishment of his own practice on Papenstraat in Maastricht, he laid the foundations for what is known today as Paulussen Advocaten.  In 1898, Paulussen relocated his office to Sint Servaasklooster in the heart of Maastricht, where it would remain for het next 100 years.

In the mid-1960s the firm began to grow, accompanied by a shift in the nature of the cases handled. From a focus on mining damage claims, it expanded to other forms of liability, including government liability, whilst at the same time forging into administrative law. Further expansion came in the 1990s, accompanied by the recruitment of additional staff and interns. By the late 1990s the firm had outgrown its premises, and in 2000 it traded the historic city centre for offices on Maastricht’s Sint Pieterskade.

Following this relocation, the firm’s development has taken rapid flight. In 2006 Paulussen Advocaten adopted a new legal structure as a public company. The Paulussen family name continues to be reflected in the new name Paulussen Advocaten NV, even if the family itself is no longer represented in the organisation.

Today, a new generation of lawyers stands at the helm, building on the foundations laid 125 years ago. On 1 January 2015, Paulussen Advocaten opened a new office in Parkstad.
