Christiaan van Veen uses his broad experience to assist clients with climate change and human rights issues.
In doing so, Christiaan draws on a diverse legal background. Before joining Paulussen Lawyers, he led a pioneering research and advocacy project on digital government and human rights at New York University School of Law (NYU Law), starting in summer 2019. From September 2014 through May 2020, he served on the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, first as senior adviser and then as special adviser on new technology and human rights. Christiaan has also taught at NYU Law, Melbourne Law School and the European University Institute and has also been a consultant to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and NYU Fellow at the Legal Vice Presidency of the World Bank.
Previously, Christiaan was a lawyer at a renowned law firm in Amsterdam where he worked primarily in the areas of European law, competition law and telecommunications law. Before that, he worked as a lawyer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a Blue Book Trainee at the Legal Service of the European Commission. Christiaan received his bachelor’s degree in Dutch Law and master’s degree in International and European Law (cum laude) from Utrecht University. He also earned a master’s degree in International Legal Studies from NYU Law.
Christiaan has registered the following main areas of law in the Register of Jurisdictions of the Dutch Bar Association:
– General practice
Pursuant to this registration, he is required to obtain ten training points in each registered main area of law each calendar year according to the standards of the Dutch Bar Association.
